WordPress, TYPO3 and Statamic are open source projects. An open source license grants users the right to use, study, modify and distribute the software and its source code for any purpose.
A community of developers often contributes to the production on a voluntary and unpaid basis and the projects are often backed by initiatives that work collaboratively and for no profit.

WordPress and TYPO3 are license-free .

However, there are costs for extensions and updates, even for projects that initially have no license fees.

• With WordPress , for example, annual license costs of several hundred euros can quickly add up for a normal website, as many paid plugins must be used to provide the basic range of functions.

• With TYPO3, it is common for extensions to be offered free of charge and financially supported on a voluntary basis. However, providing security updates for outdated TYPO3 versions can easily cost a few thousand euros per year.

The need for security updates or version updates is assessed very differently for all three systems. To put it simply:

• WordPress updates must be applied urgently and frequently (monthly).

• TYPO3 security updates are rarely urgently recommended and version updates are more of an option than a must. (recommended every 2 years)

• With Statamic, the security risks are systematically very manageable. Reliable empirical data are still lacking. We assume that, similar to TYPO3, updates are carried out to expand the range of functions rather than out of necessity.
